Crawl Space Insulation Chattanooga, TN
Cold floors are usually the symptom, not the problem
A vented crawl space pulls humid outside air under your house all summer. The cold floor you feel in January and the musty smell in July are the same fault showing up twice.
Floor System or Crawl Space Walls
Insulating the floor system puts the foam between the joists and keeps the crawl space vented and outside the envelope. Encapsulating instead seals the vents and insulates the perimeter walls, bringing the crawl space inside the envelope. Each suits different houses, and the choice follows the moisture situation, the ductwork location and how the house was built.
Moisture First, Always
Insulation over a wet crawl space makes a wet crawl space harder to see. Standing water, a failed vapour barrier on the ground or a drainage fault outside gets addressed before any foam goes in, and if we find one we will tell you plainly that it comes first. Call (423) 799-3836.
Questions
Common questions
Should crawl space vents be closed?
It depends on which approach the house suits. Encapsulation closes them; an insulated floor system keeps them open.
Will insulating the crawl space warm my floors?
It is the most direct fix for cold floors over a vented crawl space, yes.
Do you insulate crawl spaces with ductwork in them?
Yes, and ductwork down there is a strong argument for bringing the crawl space inside the envelope rather than insulating the floor above it.
